William Shakespeare’s MACBETH

Act 1 Scene 1:

Characters: The three witches

Location: A desert place

Time: Unknown (before the end of the battle)

Events: The witches plan to meet again after the battle is over. They plan to meet Macbeth on the heath

Quote: “Fair is foul and foul is fair” – A quote that contradicts itself, paradox. This quote said by all the witches tells us that everything isn’t as it seems at first glance; Theme of deception.

Act 1 Scene 2:

Characters: Duncan, Malcolm, Captain/Sergeant, Lenox, Rosse

Location: A camp near Forres

Time: After battle between Scotland and Norway

Events: Bloodied Captain meets with King. Reports on how the battle went and how Macbeth killed Macdonwald.

Quotes: “And Fortune, on his damned quarrel smiling, show’d like a rebel’s whore. But all’s too weak;  For brave Macbeth (well he deserves that name) disdaining Fortune, with his brandished steel, which smoked with bloody execution” – Captain.

Fortune is portrayed as if luck was a fickle woman (fickle meaning changing a persons loyalty frequently), and in this instance

Act 1 Scene 3:

Characters: Witches (1,2 and 3), Macbeth, Banquo, Rosse, Angus

Location: A heath near a forest

Time: Unknown

Events: The three witches meet at a Heath. Meets with Macbeth and Banquo. The witches looks into Macbeth’s future and see that

Act 1 Scene 4: 

Characters: King Duncan, Macbeth, Banquo, Malcolm, Donalbain, Lennox, Angus, Rosse.

Location: Forres (a room in the king’s palace)

Time: After the execution of Thane of Cawdor.

Events: The Thane of Cawdor dies taking all responsibility knowing that what he did was wrong(?). King Duncan praises Macbeth for the execution. Duncan decides to announce that Malcolm is next in kin for the crown. Macbeth is unsettled by this. Macbeth becomes Thane of Cawdor.

Quotes: “Stars, hide your fires. Let not light see my black and deep desires” A metaphor suggesting the extinguishing of the oversight of heaven [God]. “The eye wink at the hand, yet let that be, which the eye fears, when it is done, to see” Exploring the idea of denial where a person can act without consciously acknowledging the import of their act.

Act 1 Scene 5 

Characters: Lady Macbeth, Macbeth, Messenger

Location: A castle

Time: After the king declares that his son will become next to heir the throne

Events: Lady Macbeth receives a letter from Macbeth about the witches prophecies. She believes that Macbeth doesn’t have the evil to commit treason and execute the king. She is willing to “spill spirits” into Macbeth which will give him the drive to go ahead with the Killing and build him into a remorseless being.

Quote: “unsex me here…Stop up th[e] access and passage to remorse” – Lady Macbeth.              Asking for condonement from the spirits

Act 1 Scene 6

Characters: Duncan, Malcolm, Donalbain, Banquo, Lenox, Macduff, Rosse, Angus

Location: Macbeth’s castle

Time: The next day

Events: King Duncan and Macbeth arrive at the castle. Scene used to create tension

Act 1 Scene 7

Characters: Macbeth, Lady Macbeth

Location: The castle

Time: Around dinnertime

Events: Scene starts off with soliloquy by Macbeth reflecting on whether he should go on with the execution of the king there is no reason to kill the king other than his ambition to become the king. He decides not to. Lady Macbeth walks in, furious by hearing what Macbeth has said, insists that Macbeth is a coward, saying that .

Act 2 Scene 1

Characters: Macbeth, Banquo, Fleance

Location: A courtyard within the Macbeth’s castle

Time: Midnight

Events: Banquo, troubled by his thoughts, goes for a stroll and coincidentally bumps into Macbeth in the castles courtyard. Banquo tells Macbeth about the kings gratitude for the hospitality. They then start talking about the three witches prophecies

Time: Directly after the events of last scene

Events: The scene the previous scenes have been building up to: The killing of king

Act 3 Scene 3

Location: A park along the road leading to the palace

Events: Banquo is slain

Act 3 Scene 4

Characters: Lady Macbeth, Macbeth, Lords, Murderer, Ghost of Banquo, Lenox

Time: Banquet for the coronation of Macbeth; after Banquo was murdered

Location: Forres

Events: Banquet at Macbeth’s palace, Macbeth discusses with the murderer about the slaying of Banquo, murderer informs Macbeth that Banquo was stabbed 20 times and Fleance escaped. Macbeth orders the murderer to go have Fleance slain by tomorrow. Lady Macbeth passive-aggressively orders Macbeth to come back to the feast

Seems to be a reoccurring theme of snakes “There the grown serpent lies: the worm, that’s fled, Hath nature that in time will venom breed”

Act 3 Scene 5

Location: A heath

Events: Then witches meet with Hecate, the leader of the witches, is furious after hearing about the witches

Act 3 Scene 6

Events: Macduff and Malcolm go to England seeking for help to free Scotland from the oppression of Macbeth (oppression of being that there are no meat on the civilians tables, sleepless nights) as they do not believe Macbeth has got to the throne truthfully,

Location: A cave

Events: Three witches brew up a strong potion, preparing for the meeting with Macbeth, Macbeth arrives and demands rudely to answer his questions. The first apparition appears in form of an armoured head to warn Macbeth about the wrath Macduff is about to bring on him

Act 4 Scene 2

Location: Fife, a room in Macduff’s castle

Events: Lady Macduff reports to Ross that Macduff’s flight to England went fine. Macduff’s son murdered

Events: The Scottish army approaches Dunsinane and thanes Menteth, Cathness and Angus discuss about Macbeth’s loss of control

Quotes: “…led on by Malcolm, His uncle Siward, and the good Macduff. Revenges burn in them; for their dear causes would, to the bleeding and the grim alarm, excite the mortified man” Said by Menteth, he explains that Malcolm and Macduff have such a burning desire for revenge against Macbeth, that it would make a dead man rise up from the dead to once again die for the sound of battle against Macbeth

Act 5 Scene 3

Time: During the Scots march towards Dunsinane

Events: As the Scots march towards the English army led by Malcolm and Macduff, Macbeth receives reports from his servant about the armies approach; over 10,000 soldiers. Macbeth

Quotes: “The English force, so please you” Servant in direct reply to Macbeth. Macbeth proclaims the servants claims as bluff then goes on to insult him by calling to the death of his soul and then says “What soldiers, whey-face?” where then the servant replies “The English force, so please you” he replies sarcastically. Quotes: “Our castles strength will laugh a siege to scorn” Macbeth. Macbeth underestimates the power of the British and Scottish brigade. Could be a piece a situational irony that’s suggesting the untimely demise of Macbeth’s castle.

Act 5 Scene 6

Location: A plain before the castle

Events: Malcolm gives orders about the attack

Quotes: “Make all our trumpets speak; give them breath, Those clamorous harbingers” Macduff

Shakespeare gives the trumpets human-like features with giving them metaphorical speech

Act 5 Scene 7

Characters: Macbeth, Young Siward, Macduff, Siward

Location: Another part of the plain

Events: Macbeth faces off against Young Siward and is confident by the witches prophecies of not being able to be harmed by any man born by a woman. Macbeth starts off the scene with him proclaiming this to Siward’s son. Cue the dialogue between the two. Young Siward challenges Macbeth’s claim by saying he’ll prove him wrong by killing. Young Siward is foolish and is slain by Macbeth

Events: Macbeth feels invincible; no one can stop him. Enters Macduff with the line “Turn, hell-hound, turn”. Macbeth again proclaims that he cannot be killed by a man born from a woman,
